What is the JustWrite Program?

The JustWrite program is unique in that it is multi‑tiered, offering students and educators a comprehensive platform built around the power of the written word. At its foundation, JustWrite is an educational program that supports schools in meeting state Learning Standards—particularly those focused on writing “narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well‑chosen details, and well‑structured event sequences.” Teachers involved in the program gain access to instructional videos, mentor texts, and classroom resources that help students strengthen plot development, character, dialogue, theme, genre awareness, and more, all while learning to use precise language and sensory detail to craft vivid narratives. The program also provides opportunities for statewide networking and professional development.

A key component of this educational tier is the JustWrite Junior Invitationals, designed specifically for middle‑grade writers (grades 6–8). These one‑day invitational events introduce younger students to the JustWrite experience through age‑appropriate creative writing challenges, supportive competition, and guided practice. The Junior Invitationals help emerging writers build confidence, experiment with genre, and develop foundational narrative skills—preparing them for future participation in high school JustWrite competitions.

The second tier of the JustWrite program focuses on empowering the often overlooked and underappreciated voices of teen writers. Through a multi‑genre creative interpretation and written expression competition, high school students compose narratives and compete against peers across the state at both Regional and State tournaments. While the competition celebrates all writers, top individual writers and teams are recognized with awards. Poetry is also honored through a dedicated celebration of the inner poet. At the end of each season, the strongest student work from across the state is published in the annual JustWrite anthology, Collection of Voices, showcasing the creativity and power of student storytelling.

The third tier of the JustWrite program is a commitment to literacy. JustWrite recognizes that strong writers are also strong readers. To support this, the program offers students and coaches opportunities to engage with published authors through workshops, virtual meetups, and festivals. These experiences give students an inside look at the writing life and deepen their understanding of craft.
